There are no rules and no wrong ways to play. Here are a few ways we suggest.
WITH A GROUP
The Classic
1. The first player (Player A) pulls three random cards from the deck and chooses their favorite card (shhh, keep it a secret).
2. Player A then shows all three cards to the group.
3. The other players take turns guessing which card was Player A’s favorite.
4. Once everyone has guessed, Player A reveals their favorite card and shares the reason. Any player who guessed correctly, receives one point. Take turns until you reach the end of the deck.
The "Cards Against Humanity"
1. Divide the deck evenly between the number of players. Each round, one player (Player A) waits as the remaining players pick an Ordinary Joy from their own cards that they think will most resonate with Player A.
2. Keep the selected cards face down to keep them a secret.
3. Once the cards are all selected, Player A then chooses their favorite and explains why. The player whose card was chosen receives one point. Continue taking turns until all cards have been played.
This or That (best for 2 people)
1. Pull two cards from the deck at a time.
2. On the count of three, everyone says their favorite between the two.
3. Share why you chose the card that you did. Continue until you get to the end of the deck.
SOLO
The Original
Choose your five favorite cards from the deck and reflect on the reason you chose each one — a story, a memory, a feeling, anything goes.
The Reflection
Select one card at random as a journal prompt. Write about the story, memory, or feeling that comes up for you.
